Knowledge and Practices Regarding Breast Cancer in Women Aged 40 to 56 Years in Panama: A Descriptive Study at the National Association Against Cancer (ANCEC)

Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in women worldwide. This descriptive study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge and practices regarding breast cancer in a group of women aged 40 to 56 years who attend the National Association Against Cancer (ANCEC) in Panama. Surveys were conducted with 53 women, including questions on sociodemographic factors, breast cancer knowledge, and preventive practices such as self-examination and mammography. The results showed that 63% of the respondents have a high level of knowledge about breast cancer, but there is confusion about the appropriate age for mammography. Additionally, 81% of the participants consider breast self-examination easy to perform, but only 52% include axillary and nipple examination, indicating a need for more education in this area. An educational program is proposed to improve preventive practices and reduce the impact of breast cancer in this population.
