Abstract

The study explores qualitative data to compare the experiences and challenges faced by Kuna educators working in the Kuna Yala Comarca and in urban areas of Panama to preserve their language and culture in a multicultural educational environment. A sample of 34 educators from the Panamanian educational system in both regions was taken. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected were handled anonymously and all necessary precautions were taken to protect the identity of the participants. Among the main findings were a need for bibliographic resources in the linguistic and cultural contexts of Kuna Indigenous students and educators, institutional support, linguistic barriers, and training in intercultural bilingual education.
