Abstract

The main objective of this study was the comparative analysis of the agronomic characteristics of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum), with an emphasis on the Roma V.F. variety, under two light conditions: semi-shade and direct sunlight. The study was conducted in the Azuero region, in the El Recreo experimental area. Important parameters such as plant height, number of fruits per unit, average fruit weight, flowering period, and yield per plant were evaluated using a randomized block design. The analysis was carried out from sowing to harvest, applying consistent agronomic management under both growing conditions. The results showed statistically significant differences in total production. Direct sunlight resulted in higher fruit set and total harvest weight. However, plants grown in semi-shade showed more vigorous vegetative growth and were less affected by heat stress. The results suggest that, while direct sunlight improves tomato yield, semi-shading can be an effective agronomic strategy during high temperatures or to extend the growing season. Overall, this research provides valuable information for decision-making in adopting more efficient and sustainable agricultural practices, adapted to local agroclimatic conditions, aimed at improving productivity and food security.
