Abstract
Over the years, community-based tourism has gained prominence in various Latin American contexts, where it has proven to be an alternative for strengthening cultural identity, promoting sustainability, and improving the living conditions of indigenous populations. Within this framework, the Emberá Parará Purú Biakiru community in Panama has developed various community-based tourism initiatives that host domestic and international visitors and showcase unique and original cultural expressions. This research aims to foster community-based tourism as a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development within the Emberá Parará Purú Biakiru community. The study employs a qualitative approach based on direct observation, interviews with community members, and a review of relevant information regarding community-based tourism and indigenous culture. The results show that tourism activities have enabled residents to generate income; however, there are deficiencies in basic services and climate-related limitations. Furthermore, the study found that tourism activities have encouraged the preservation of traditional practices and the intergenerational transmission of cultural knowledge, though there remains a need to diversify offerings and to establish partnerships across sectors. Finally, a proposal is developed to transform limitations into opportunities; the study concludes that community-based tourism in Emberá Pãrãrã Puru Biakiru is establishing itself as a tool that contributes to local economic development while strengthening appreciation for and the continuity of Emberá culture.
